Background of the Study

Voter apathy, characterized by low voter turnout and disengagement from electoral processes, poses a significant challenge to democratic consolidation. In Nigeria, electoral participation remains inconsistent, with apathy especially pronounced in gubernatorial and local elections (Adamu & Sule, 2023). Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State reflects this trend, with the 2019 gubernatorial elections witnessing low voter turnout despite efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political parties to mobilize voters (Danladi & Ibrahim, 2024). Voter apathy undermines the legitimacy of electoral outcomes, weakening the foundation of representative democracy. This study examines the factors contributing to voter apathy in Jalingo LGA and evaluates its implications for democratic governance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The 2019 gubernatorial elections in Jalingo LGA were marked by significant voter apathy, despite heightened political campaigns and awareness programs. This disengagement raises critical concerns about the effectiveness of democratic institutions and the inclusiveness of electoral processes (Abubakar & Hassan, 2023). Factors such as mistrust in political leaders, electoral violence, and socio-economic challenges have been identified as barriers to voter participation. Addressing these issues is vital for enhancing electoral participation and strengthening democracy in Jalingo LGA.
